Minas Kosmidis [Architecture in Concept] team rebranded the flagship store of a well-know pastry chain in Nicosia, Cyprus. This is the first of the company’s seven stores which was renovated and plans indicate that the next six are to follow. The name of the shop was the core of inspiration behind the whole design approach. The influences of the New York City’s landmark buildings, along with the characteristic grid-like layout of the city are obvious even from the first glance of the shop. The metal grid, the wooden details, the mosaics, the well-studied layout of the desserts, is a marvelous combination of NYC’s architectural and structural elements.
But here we need to pause on the marble applications. The architectural team did a magnificent work, materializing the NYC’s approach specifically with the marble claddings and decorative elements. The robust geometrical marble solids, represent perfectly the orthogonal structures of the city while the nature of the material interacts impeccably with the products displayed.Though, what really catches our eye, in regards with marble application, is the graphical approach of the Manhattan’s notorious skyline. Marble of different types and shapes create an impressive sculptural mural which takes up the entire length of the wall behind the largest display case.
Here we have such a remarkable example of how marble can function as the pawn in a designer’s hand, with which an amazing concept can be brought to life. It is solid proof how a material can outgrow itself through an inspiring idea.
